Responsibilities

At Otter Tail Power Company, our employees support the communities we serve by producing reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible electricity. The Project Manager will:

  • Manage and lead all aspects of projects ranging from 1-5 year timelines and $5 million - $100 million budgets including preparing estimates and budgetary forecasts, managing consultants and contractor and track costs and progress
  • Identify and mitigate project risks
  • Manage projects portfolio for successful completion and ensure preparedness for future projects
  • Collaborate with the internal teams to ensure projects will achieve unimpeded and complete cost recovery

Electrical Engineering Intern

Responsibilities

Otter Tail Power Company is currently seeking qualified student applicants to fill multiple Electrical Engineering Intern positions. The timeframe for this Intern position is from mid-May to mid-August 2025.

The duties of the Intern may include:

  • Perform various technical analyses of the existing and planned transmission or distribution system in the upper Midwest in order to reliably serve our customers while maintaining efficient use of the transmission or distribution system.
  • Data gathering, system updates and supporting existing engineering staff with their on-going efforts.
  • Work with computer software simulations to conduct various types of transmission or distribution system analyses.
  • Utilize computer tools to monitor the performance of the transmission or distribution grid.  
  • Provide software support within the Energy Management System related environments. Duties may include software development, display building and maintenance and development of application and user documentation. 
  • Work closely with engineers, system operators and multiple departments as required to facilitate job duties.
  • Perform various short circuit and coordination studies.
  • Assist with relay and control design.
Qualifications

Looking for students in the electrical engineering curriculum with excellent organizational and written communication skills to draft accurate reports and make recommendations based on economic and technical support. The successful candidate will need strong oral communication skills and the ability to work together with people both within the company and with corresponding transmission counterparts at neighboring utilities. The successful candidate must have proficient computer skills with the ability to run various software applications and simulations including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access.  Background in power engineering classes is preferred, but not required. Some travel may be required. The expected base compensation for this role is $17-$24 hourly.

GIS Intern

Assist in data analysis, programming, and data management

  • Using ESRI GIS software for data analysis

Engineering Intern

Responsibilities

Otter Tail Power Company is currently seeking a qualified student applicant to fill an Engineering Intern position in Fergus Falls, MN. The timeframe for this Intern position is from mid-May to mid-August 2025.

The duties of the Intern may include:

  • Perform various technical analyses of existing transmission line designs.
  • Data gathering, system updates, and providing support to engineering, design, and maintenance staff with their on-going efforts.
  • Work with computer software including PLS-CAD and AutoCAD to verify transmission line information.
  • Collaboration with engineers, GIS, land rights & surveying along with other departments to facilitate job duties.  
  • Provide support as needed for transmission maintenance related activities including evaluating findings, manage and document information effectively, maintenance policy reviews and edits. 
  • Assist with transmission line design.
Qualifications

Looking for students in the engineering curriculum with excellent organizational and detail oriented to review and interpret various transmission line construction documents, inspection reports, mitigation plans and assist engineers and maintenance personnel. Surveyor I or II

Responsibilities

In this role, Surveyor will generate data and information that helps the team achieve project excellence as the company continues to grow and evolve. 

Some examples of those activities will include:

·        Generate survey data for utility mapping/GIS purposes, volume surveys, hydroelectric dam monitoring, easement determination and boundary determination.

·        Prepare documents or drawings for design, construction, easements, boundaries, volume calculations, highway and railroad crossing permits

·        Review and revise easements and legal descriptions from the land rights department prior to recording.

Well-Qualified Journeyman or Apprentice Service Representative

OTP is seeking a full-time Well-Qualified Journeyman or Apprentice Service Representative located in McClusky, ND.

Qualifications

Applicants must be sufficiently qualified as a Journeyman Lineman or Apprentice Lineman and be able to do necessary emergency repair work. Must have a diploma from an accredited line worker program or equivalent experience. Must have knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance, and repair. Must be able to assume responsibilities for area operations, maintain favorable public relations, and supervise and instruct assistants as necessary. Must have a valid unrestricted interstate commercial driver’s license. Successful applicant will be expected to reside within 25 miles of permanent headquarters in McClusky, ND.

Serves as the Company representative in the designated group of towns. Installs, removes, or replaces meters in customer establishments. Installs and maintains service lines, receiving customer complaints and performing necessary repair work to overhead distribution or service facilities.

Supervisor, Electrical Technician

In this role, the Supervisor, Electrical Technician will lead Electrical Technicians in order to complete Asset Management projects and maintain existing assets.  By leading our employees well, the Supervisor, Electrical Technician will not only help to develop their careers but also ensure an excellent project execution.

Some examples of those activities will include:

·        Lead team of Electrical Techs to complete projects, maintain existing assets, ensure NERC compliance testing, and power restoration

·        Lead in repairing and maintaining equipment.

·        Train and develop Apprentice employees into Journeyman Technicians.

·        Ensure and foster safety behaviors and culture

·        Develop and meet labor, materials and time budgets
