Central air, ductless, or high-velocity air conditioning offer efficiency.
Air-conditioning systems aren’t one size fits all. Instead, several options help ensure your building cools in the most efficient way.
If you have existing ductwork for heating, you can easily leverage it to distribute cool air with a central air conditioner. Central air-conditioning systems are eligible for savings through our CoolSavings program.
Note: Due to a number of available rebate programs and federal tax credit and incentive programs, an air-source heat pump system (ASHP) may cost less to install than a central air-conditioning system. ASHPs offer the same central cooling benefits along with efficient heating benefits. (Look for our heat pump program below to learn more.)
If your home doesn't have existing ductwork, you may want to go with ductless air conditioning.
Ductless air conditioning is quiet and compact. It's linked by refrigeration lines to an efficient outdoor compressor, and because it doesn't require ductwork, provides cooling without the need for a costly remodel.
Another way to install air conditioning without traditional ductwork installation is through high-velocity air conditioning, which distributes cooled air at speeds through insulated and flexible tubes placed between wall studs in closets that can be worked to flow around obstructions.
High-velocity air conditioning allows you to reach every room without major remodeling and is used to upgrade historic homes.
More flexible options are also available—from traditional window and wall-mount air conditioners to portable air-conditioner units.

Turn up your thermostat on your air-conditioning system. For each degree you raise the temperature, you’ll save about 3% on cooling costs for the period the setting is raised.
Check for gaps. Walk around the outside of your home and check for gaps around pipes, conduits, chimneys, lights, windows, and brick or cement work. Fill them with an easy-to-use spray-foam insulation or caulk. Use a high-temperature product if it will contact a hot surface, such as a flue pipe or chimney.
