Air-source heat pumps

Technology uses heat already present in the air to heat and cool.

What are air-source heat pumps?

An air-source heat pump captures heat from outside air to warm your home.

Heat pumps are an efficient and clean way to move heat into your home. Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) capture heat from the outside air and use it to warm interior spaces.

Benefits of air-source heat pumps

Like all heat pumps, the benefits of ASHPs are:

  • Safe and clean—ASHPs don't burn fuels. They capture free heat so are among the cleanest and safest heating and cooling systems available today.
  • Cost-effective—Compatible and an easy way to upgrade your existing forced-air heating and cooling system.
  • Efficient—Air-source heat pumps operate at 200% to 400% efficiency.

How do they work?

Heat pumps move heat, rather than create heat, which means they take less energy and provide higher efficiency.

There are three main types of air-source heat pumps:

  • Standard air-source heat pumps, which work well down to outside temperatures of about 25 degrees F.
  • Cold-climate heat pumps, which are specially designed to stay efficient during colder winter months supplying heat down to 0 degrees F. or lower.
  • Air-to-water heat pumps, which transfer the heat collected from the air to a water/glycol solution to supply heat to hydronic-heating systems.
